Tragic Lay is the solo project of Balik Zabal, former member of Vainforce and the short-lived TEARS BLOOD LIQUOR, among others. Despite being known for a harsh and heavy sound, Tragic Lay focuses on a range of musical styles that are a far cry from his previous projects.
History
Tragic Lay is the solo project of Balik Zabal, former member of Vainforce and the short-lived TEARS BLOOD LIQUOR, among others. Like previous band mate Anya Marquez, Zabal hoped to attach himself to a project free of personal conflict. After the falling out of TBL, Zabal returned to his ancestral home of Hwox with his younger brother in an attempt to reconnect with their culture. The music of the Hwoxin people was a favorite subject for Zabal when he attended the Ohmo Conversatory as a young man and so inspired by his travels he returned to Causeway and immediately began work on Tragic Lay.
Musical style and Influences
As a producer, multi-instrumentalist, and bandleader for much of his life, Zabal combined the raw, guitar-driven solos of his previous work and the jazzy undercurrents of his traditional schooling at Ohmo Conservatory of Music with tight horn arrangements, electrifying and occasionally bizarre polyrhythms, and sombre, melodic lyrical content for the creation of Tragic Lay. His first release, contapasso, is stated to quite literally be his reaction to his previous band's demise. Rambling instrumentals with only a few vocals in old Hwoxin dialect compromise the majority of the album's 24 minute runtime. "Weskry", a word meaning 'can be kicked', is a cover of a traditional folk song of the same name. While critics applauded the new direction the album failed to reach his long-time fans, and the following works became less abstract.
